Just another white trash county kiss

Completely putting aside the fact that I'm am in lust love with Brandon Flowers, I must say that The Killers new album, Day & Age is monstrously good. I've listened to a barrage of new albums in the last three days, but by far Day & Age is my favourite. The genres are definitely blurred on the album, though rock alternative remains its core, the funk and up-tempo beats prevalent throughout the tracks are so seamlessly woven in with The Killers "sound" that it just adds the oomph of the album. Yes, while The Killers have always carried up-tempo numbers on their albums, Day & Age finds the beats a lot cleaner. Listening to the album on repeat at work last night, I honestly could not find a weak track.

The album is set for release next Tuesday, and I encourage everyone to go out and purchase the album to show their support. Also? The Killers are currently on (or about to embark) tour for Day & Age, the tickets are cheap (already got mine!) so hit up ticketmaster to see if they're playing at a venue near you.

Cotton candy kiss, can't wait for my sugar rush

Shitty Photoshopping aside, let me say this now: Circus is brilliant. I was a major fan of Ms. Spears last effort, Blackout--an album grossly overshadowed by the singer's batshit crazy antics at the time, but dayum! has Circus got it beat!

Warmer, more playful, more Britney in general, and with two ballads thrown in for good measure, Circus is bound to quickly become a fan favourite. It's funky and utilizes the synth a lot less in comparison to it's predecessor. It's an awesome pop album. Yes, some of the lyrics are completely nonsensical, and the cover is trash (though admittedly, not nearly as bad as Blackout's), but the album is so damn catchy and charming, dammit! "Kill the Lights" is brilliant, turning the tables once again on the paparazzi, best line? "Is that money in your pocket, or are you happy to see me?" Catchy, sassy, and dancey--who could ask for more? Circus possesses the heart that Blackout was lacking. Don't get me wrong, I loved Blackout and believe it would have been better received if not overshadowed by that not-nearly-as-terrible-as-everyone-makes-it-out-to-be VMA performance as well as Ms. Spears's odd behaviour. It's a 90 minute dance-a-thon. But Circus, ah, Circus--will hopefully be the comeback we fans have been hoping for (now if only Michael Jackson would get the memo). You best believe that is Britney goes on tour, this bish is seeing her. Fo' realsies.

Circus is slated for release on December 2nd, BUY IT.

Why does my heart keep singin' these rhymes?

If you're into singer-songwriters, then here is a name you need to know: Peter Bradley Adams. A little Bob Dylan-esque, a little Damien Rice, and a whole lotta good, Peter Bradley Adams is destined for big things, and I encourage you all to check him out. He's a heart and soul with a guitar, I don't know how else to describe it. Adams's songs transport me back upstate, to the long weekend drives through Pennsylvania and the Catskills. It's feel-good music that doesn't rely on phat beats and Timbaland production skills--it's simple and heartfelt.

Interesting story about Peter:
"Peter wrote a song called "So Are You To Me" for his sister's wedding. Peter had so much demand for the sheet music for weddings that now he freely gives it out to any askers on MySpace. The eastmountainsouth version of this song has sold over 17,000 downloads without a speck of promotion or a single radio spin.... Now Peter has recorded his own version of the song for Leavetaking."

How is that for impressive?

Peter was a co-founder of eastmountainsouth, a band signed to DreamWorks by Robbie Patterson (yes! THAT Robbie Robertson). Peter has since parted and released his debut solo album in 2006, Gather Up. The release of his follow-up album, Leavetaking, is scheduled for release on August 5th. Below is a song off Leavetaking, "Always."

Peter Bradley Adams -- Always

Because I know you love what you hear, check out his MySpace for more tunes, Peter Bradley Adams @ MySpace. Hell, even if you don't love what you hear, check out the rest of the songs on his MySpace page. They're amazing, personal favourites being "Longer I Run," "I'll Forget You" (reminiscent at times of Dylan's "In My Time Of Dying"), and "Under My Skin" and "Queen of Hearts."

And our time is not infinite

The Magnetic Fields NYC based indie-pop, has been a bedfellow of mine since moving. Polished lo-fi--brassy, synthy, all heart, pop sensibilities without the glossy luster of it's top 40 brethren, the Magnetic Fields definitely can't be accused of following the crowd.

I know they get a lot of hype for their 69 Love Songs albums, and don't get me wrong, they're great albums (a personal soft spot for vol. I), but I've always found myself drawn more towards i. Great album. Great, and if you're unfamiliar with it, then I have only one thing of advice for you: get yourself familiar with it.

A Beach party. That is what the White Rabbits sound like; a beach party. Rock infused with flamenco, salsa, reggae, ska, and pop--throw in a couple of cold brews, a hawaiian shirt or two, and ray bans, and we're set. Opening for Spoon the other night, this sextet originally from Missouri and now Brooklyn based, blew my music lovin' heart & mind.

Check it. Two guitarists/one vox, one bassist, one keyboardists/bongo man/vox, and two drummers. The drummers also play whatever other instruments are needed, tambourine, keyboard, maracas, etc.. It was a musical feast for both eyes and ears. The rhythms were rolling and made it impossible for you to just stand still. I absolutely loved them, and can not recommend a band more highly. Check out their debut album, Fort Nightly, you will not be disappointed. I haven't been able to get enough of them.

Sometimes I Think I'll Find A Love, One That's Gonna Change My Heart

>

Admittedly, before Tuesday, I hadn't really given Spoon much consideration. Sure, I owned Girls Can Tell and Gimme Fiction, and did listen to them on occasion (especially Girls), but for one reason or another, they just didn't manage to capture my full interest. That folks, has changed after seeing them live. I mean the passion put forth, especially by their charismatic frontman, Britt Daniels, didn't leave anyone denying that they love what they do.

Pre-concert, I had attempted to familiarize myself with Spoon's latest release and the like, Ga Ga Ga Ga, but largely due to a sloth-like laptop, could not burn the album for a proper listen. Now that laptop runs much smoother, and am able to run more than one program at once without it taking an eon to do anything, have procured myself solid copies of what was missing from my Spoon collection.

I Held So Many People In My Suitcase Heart

Bare bones with just enough production to polish their sound and underscore their simple melodies, The Weepies have managed to create three über low-key-sunshine-mellow albums. Granted, their latest release Hideaway is noticeably less bare bones and more produced in sound, but the sentiment prevalent throughout their earlier works is still at the core of it.

Saccharine packed with heart and interesting metaphors, The Weepies songs lend themselves all too easily to mixtapes. "Somebody Loved," "Gotta Have You," and "Take It From Me" three prime examples of superb lovey mixtape centerpiece songs. The simplicity of the overall production of those songs packs them with a bigger emotional wallop. Those songs are the songs you send out because they're songs you wish somebody would think of whilst assembling a mixtape for you. They're gushy without being obnoxious.

I had stumbled upon "Somebody Loved" in summer '06, and being of the mushy hearted variety, quickly procured and aurally devoured the rest of the album, Say I Am You. In my opinion, Say I Am You is a quintessential summer album. On my desert island top 5 list of summer albums, Say I Am You would be number 2, second only to The Beach Boys, Pet Sounds. There are none in my book that trump The Beach Boys in summer tunes. None.

And to end this audiogasm, a few tunes...

Somebody Loved - The Weepies

Gotta Have You - The Weepies

A Painting By Chagall - The Weepies

Love Doesnt Last Too Long - The Weepies

Paul Simon: one of my musical heroes since I was little. "59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" has been one of my favourite tunes as long as I can remember. My mom was a Simon & Garfunkel fan, I remember summer nights on the porch, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, & Thyme drifting out of the house as my mom cooked. While I love Art Garfunkel, it's impossible to deny that Simon was the driving force behind the duo. He wrote the songs. It was his heart and soul being poured into their simple melodies and lyrics. His solo career is even better than Simon & Garfunkel (and I am a giant Simon & The Funk fan). Varied in its sounds, incorporating blues, grassroots, gospel, African, and good old fashioned rock, just to name a few.

And I know everyone looks to The Beatles for simple love songs ("I Want to Hold Your Hand" being a personal favourite), but Simon's "Song For the Asking" oozes simplicity and vulnerability, that one can't help but want to fall in love with the next person they lay eyes on. And who can deny his poetic flair with words? "A Heart in New York," "Poem on the Underground Wall," "Sound of Silence"--just to name a few.

I know white rappers who claim they're more artistic and advanced than the inner city tune is

A discussion with a friend about Aesop Rock, ultimately lead to a discussion about El-Producto, better known as El-P.

As a rapper, El-P brings a verbosity to his rhymes not often heard let alone matched, blowin' the listeners mind time and time again with the words he strings together and spits. Never stretched or reaching, El-P's raps generally take a solid two listens to completely absorb and appreciate the brilliancy woven throughout. And as a Producer? Forget it. Opting for a grungier lo-fi sound, El-P's production skills not only amplify his rhymes, but compliment them as well. This rings true for fellow NYC hip-hopper, Aesop Rock, for whom he has produced several tracks. Underground and meant to please himself more than others, El-P doesn't go for the glitz like Kanye, because frankly, he doesn't have to. They're rappers on completely opposite sides of the hip-hop spectrum. 'Ye is in it for the money, El-P is in it because he loves it. And don't get me wrong, I love me some Kanye (as can be attested to by the several posts riddled throughout this blog on him), but you can't listen to El-P or Aesop Rock, and then listen to Kanye West, and tell me they're playas in the same game, because they're not. Kanye couldn't keep up with either of them if he tried, because apples and oranges, though both fruits, just aren't the same.

I've gotten off-track, I'm sorry, but there was a point to be made. While El-P may not be commercially friendly, his passion for hip-hop shines in his work. Passion begets passion, so, so what if he's not breaking the bank? He's got a following more loyal and more apt to stick with him than Kanye or Fitty.

Before I drop the tunes, let me note that El-P is playing Webster Hall on Saturday, May 10th. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of. For more information, go here. You best believe that if I wasn't pinching pennies, I'd be all over that show. Now cue the music!

Having always had a thing for dark hair, dark eyes, and well, Prince in general: that picture is doing things for me right now. Prince is another bish turning 50 this year, and he still has got IT. I inherited my love of Prince from my sister. Needless to say, our mother did not appreciate her youngest daughter prancing around the house with her walkman, singing along with "Pop Life," "Erotic City," and "Purple Rain." I am a pop whore to the core, and a sucker for high-singing pop-funk-rNb musicians. If I had a car and no financial responsibilities whatsoever, I would totally be heading to Coachella this weekend. Totally.

Kate Nash's album, Made of Bricks has been in heavy rotation on my 'Pod as of late. With Spring raging, the album only amplifies the sunshine. Poppy bits coupled with the piana and Kate's vocals, remind me of a visit to someone's beach house with everyone lazing about, as one of your friends sits at the piano, jamming away. A breakup album if ever there was one; a majority of Made of Bricks deals with with failed romance. However, Nash's sweet voice and poppin' piano melodies, manage to make Bricks maintain a feelgood vibe throughout with the saccharine delivery of lyrics like:
Yeah you make me merry make me very very happy
But you obviously, you didn't want to stick around
["Merry Happy"]

and

You've got that look in your eyes,
When I'm telling a story
And you find it boring you're thinking of something to say.
You'll go along with and then drop it
And you humiliate me, in front of our friends
["Foundations"]

While Nash takes jabs at ex's with witty lyrics, she also takes a few jabs at herself by exposing weaknesses in heart&soul-bearing tracks like "We Get On" and "Nicest Thing"--songs both dealing with obsession, crushing, and unrequited affection. With pop-indie sensibilities, and being cute as a button, Kate Nash is definitely slated for success (or at least Regina Spektor's fanbase.)

Respect's not given, it's earned

Michael Jackson: bringing people together since 1966. Friday night a new co-worker and I bonded over Michael Jackson. It began innocently enough with my blasting of some MJ tracks on my iPod, and escalated as co-worker overheard "The Girl is Mine" and remarked that it was his favourite Jackson tune. This lead to us not only discussing our favourite tunes, but albums as well--mine: Dangerous, his: Thriller. Having over five hours of the Gloved One's tunes on the iPod, kept the conversation and sing-a-longs going for most of our shift.

Listening to Dangerous last night brought back some of the best memories of my childhood as I was obsessed with the King of Pop. He was the first musician I took to on my own, without the influence of my siblings or parents. As I've said before, MTV was an everyday staple in our household, and since Michael Jackson was kind of a big deal throughout the late 80's and early 90's, you would have been hard pressed not to have watched at least one Michael Jackson video between the hours of 5am and 8am. He was the King of Pop--and for good reason. Flawless records with slick production, over-the-top music videos, brought together with crazy good dance skills--I mean, it was hard not to give the guy props.

It's been a while since MJ has received any good publicity, and with celebrating the 25th anniversary of Thriller, I think the time for a new album has arrived. According to his Wikipedia page, such a thing is in the works, and even slated to drop this year. With the right producers, and a slightly updated sound (think the last four tracks of Invincible). I mean, what better way to celebrate turning 50, then by releasing a new record and again reigning supreme as the King of Pop? Also? A new album would mean a new tour, and I've been dying to see him live since I was in kindergarten. It's sad to think talent like his has been sitting idle for nearly a decade.

M.I.A. is playing in Brooklyn. I want to go. Fuck it, I need to go. $37.50--a bit steep, but it's going to be fucking worth it. Pardon, I tend to drop the f-bomb when excited. M.I.A. is a hot bitch, and the only thing hotter than her, is her music. Fleetwood Mac--a band that truly has my heart. If ever I marry, I think one of my requirements in a spouse would be that he loves Fleetwood Mac. Because one, if he could sing me any of the mushy love songs they've put out over the years, I could never be mad at him, two, he's obviously good people, and three, when listening to The Mac, all I want to do is makeout and be gushy with someone--especially when listening to their album, Tango in the Night. Between "Big Love," "Family Man," and my personal favourite Mac tune, "Everywhere"--this girl's heart can't help but get all a-flutter. You want to know why else Fleetwood Mac is amazing? They can do angst and heartbreak just as well as they can do lovey-dovey--and they can do it smiling whilst giving their ex the lyrics they inspired and then ask them to not only sing them, but record them as well. Isn't falling in love with a colleague a bitch--especially when you're in a band? While I am a Stevie Nicks girl myself (short chicks need to stick together), if the only Fleetwood Mac songs you know are Stevie driven, you need go out and buy Fleetwood Mac & Tango in the Night, stat. Oh, and when you buy Fleetwood Mac make sure you listen to the entire album, and not just the tracks you know. There will be a quiz, so make sure you study.

Let's get it on, jam all night long

Backstreet Boys. Oh, the memories and gushy pubescent feelings just that name evokes. Yes, I was a BSB fangirl. And no, I am NOT ashamed to admit it. From the ages eleven to fourteen I had eyes for no other boy band. NSYNC? Boo! Hiss! Yes, I listened to other things. I had three older siblings whose musical tastes differentiated greatly, and being the youngest and wanting their attention, I listened to everything they did. From Michael Jackson to Pantera to Garth Brooks to the Wu-Tang--I absorbed it all with audio delight. However, I need blame my sister for my penchant towards boy bands if only for her preoccupation with a certain '80s phenomenon: New Kids on the Block. I think I've digressed too much.

Anyways, as I was saying (or rather, about to say) was that those five "boys" (the Backstreet Boys) saw me through some of the most difficult times in my young life. Paternal infidelity, death, divorce, breaking of friendships, breaking of hearts--they were the comfort I sought after. I've always been one to drown my sorrows with a pen or a set of headphones, and those times were no exception. The Backstreet Boys were so saccharine, so safe, and so fucking cute and non-threatening, that looking back, it only seemed natural to choose them as my comforters. My musical knights in sugar-soaked armour, because hey, they promised to never break my heart. And how irresistible is that to a thirteen year old girl licking her wounds from her first heartbreak?

Millennium is pop perfection. Fight me on that, and you will fail. Miserably. I had to re-purchase that album three times because I wore out my cassettes that fucking much. (Yeah, I said cassettes, I didn't get a cd player of any kind until I was a sophmore in high school. So, eat it). More poppy and less RnB then their debut, it's just perfection and so succinct to that period of musical history with its sound. It's hard not to listen to that album and think of the late '90s early '00s. Maybe that's just me. Either way, Millennium is a flawless pop record--even with the nonsensical hottness that is "I Want It That Way."

You were such a P.Y.T. with a free ticket

Who knew a free ticket could be so hard to get rid of? I, now having an extra ticket to the Justice concert next month, can not for the life of me get rid of said ticket. I've asked nearly ten people, all of whom have 1) never heard of Justice 2) don't enjoy that sort of music or 3) have other plans that night. Ugh, in a time where money is tight, you'd think giving away free shit would be easy. I may end up giving that ticket away for free the day of--snag some hooligan off the streets, because this homegirl ain't going alone. Between this ticket fiasco and accidentally not showing up for work last night (thought I had the night off, oops), this week is already shaping up to be pretty spectacular. Go me.

On the dance floor, got my body gonna use it

Kylie Minogue is a one woman disco. Being of the Fraggle Rock mindset in "dancing your cares away," I can not help but promote Kylie as the woman to help you do just that. Her songs are infectious; the hip swinging beats and the girlish heart prevalent throughout the songs provide the best grooves to work out a weeks worth of frustrations. Turn on your stereo, attach the iPod to the hip, blast Kylie and fall into her groovetastic rhythms. She makes fun music with heart. Yes, the heart in her songs is sometimes insipidly sappy, but hey? If you can shake your ass to it and forget the bullshit for a few minutes, then who cares? Not this chick, for one (obviously). Now let's get to the meat and potatoes of this post, shall we?

Minogue's latest effort, X, is flawless. It's a departure for Kylie as she moves from her typical pop-disco sound into a more electro one. And while the change isn't a 180 like Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor, it's still noticeable (as well as welcomed). The move into a more electronic sound for Minogue is simply a natural progression, keeping her sound fresh and her listeners interested.

Combing my Kylie albums for songs to throw up here for your listening pleasure, I ended up with a list of nearly fifty songs. Yeah. I'm not posting fifty songs in one go, let alone fifty songs from a single artist. To encourage you all to purchase Ms. Minogue's albums, I am going to leave you wanting more by cutting the list down to seventeen. A generous helping of Kylie still, yes, but not too big so as to leave room for dessert.

The following songs go from oldest to newest to give you a feel as to how her sound has progressed.

Kylie Minogue -- The Locomotion [you realise I had to put this one up, right?]

Kylie Minogue -- Better the Devil You Know

Kylie Minogue -- Confide in Me

Kylie Minogue -- Hand on Your Heart

Kylie Minogue -- Fever

Kylie Minogue -- Dance Floor

Kylie Minogue -- Burning Up

Kylie Minogue -- Love Affair

Kylie Minogue -- On a Night Like This

Kylie Minogue -- Your Disco Needs You

Kylie Minogue -- Bittersweet Goodbye [Ballad]

Kylie Minogue -- Chocolate [my personal favourite]

Kylie Minogue -- Red Blooded Woman (Live)

Kylie Minogue -- Magnetic Electric

Kylie Minogue -- In My Arms

Kylie Minogue -- Nu-di-ty [dope]

Kylie Minogue -- Stars

Kylie Minogue -- Speakerphone

The last four five are off X.

Hush, boy, if you want me for your girlfriend

The Basement Jaxx, my current obsession; making love to my ears and moving my hips every night for the past two weeks. A house duo (not unlike fellow contemporaries, Daft Punk) comprised of the brilliancy of Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe as well as electronic phenomenawesomeness. Hailing from Mother England, they've been on the scene since the mid-nineties, releasing their first LP in late-ish '99. Perhaps one of the more approachable electronic acts out there today providing listeners with not only some groovetastic beats, but poignant lyrics as well; dealing with a woman's insatiable libido to heartbreak. I could go on and on about how amazing they are, honestly, I could, but I think I'll put a sock in it, and let the music do the "talking" instead.

Basement Jaxx -- Hot 'n' Cold

Basement Jaxx -- Hush

Basement Jaxx -- If I Ever Recover [Side Note: Who knew heartbreak could be dancey and sincere at the same time without losing any of its heart?]
